What is Smart Lighting?
Smart lighting incorporates several technologies that will take your experience of lighting to a new level. Or at the very least, well beyond the capabilities of a humble light switch!
LED - all of our smart lights use LED lighting technology. This means they are energy efficient and cost less to operate than other lights. It also means the ability to dim or change colour can be 'built-in' to each light.
Wireless App Control - smart lights are accessible via the internet, Wifi and/or Bluetooth. As these technologies are now nearly ubiquitous, it has made smart lighting available to everyone. Smart lighting is no longer the domain of stage lighting experts sitting behind a large control desk and a tangle of wires.
Note: We also think motion sensor lights and those with a tri colour switch are smart lighting choices. But for the sake of clarity, we are talking here about lights that use the above two core technologies.
Smart Light Features
Key features and capabilities of smart lights include:
- Connectivity - Smart lights connect to a wireless network in your home (Bluetooth, Zigbee, Thread, or Wifi), allowing you to control them remotely through a smartphone app, tablet, or voice-controlled smart home assistant (like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit).
- Adjustability - You can adjust the brightness and often the colour temperature (from cool to warm light) and actual colour (for RGB LEDs) to create different moods or scenes in your home.
- Scheduling - Smart LED lights can be programmed to turn on or off at specific times. This can be used for convenience, such as turning lights on before you arrive home, or for security purposes, to simulate someone being home when the house is empty.
- Voice Control - Our smart lights are compatible with voice-controlled smart home devices, allowing you to turn lights on or off, dim them, or change their colour with voice commands.
- Energy Efficiency - Smart LED lights are more energy-efficient than traditional incandescent bulbs and offer longer lifespans. Their smart capabilities also contribute to energy savings by allowing for more precise control over when and how they are used.
- Integration with Smart Home Systems - Smart lights can be integrated into broader smart home systems, allowing for coordinated control with other smart devices, like thermostats, cameras, and security systems.
- Geofencing - Some smart lighting systems can use your smartphone's location to automatically adjust the lighting based on whether you are home or away.
Smart lights are part of the broader category of smart home devices aimed at increasing convenience, energy efficiency, and security in modern living spaces.
