The Energy Freedom Home Book
The average Australian household spends over $2,000 a year on gas and electricity bills. The Energy-Freedom Home book shows you how to wipe out these bills, while making your home more comfortable.
The book focuses on eight steps to use energy more efficiently, and more effectively. The ninth step is to offset your remaining energy usage with solar power.
The book does approach this task from the perspective of an 'owner occupier' of a free standing house. However, even if you rent, or live in a unit, this book is still of great assistance. This is because the vast majority of principles and actions discussed apply to all homes, regardless of their make-up.
The Energy-Freedom Home is detailed enough for you to take informed action, without getting bogged down in too much technical detail.
Don't just read the book - take action!
The authors of this book have the same goal as Reduction Revolution - to help anyone live more efficiently and sustainably.
Many of the concepts outlined in The Energy Freedom Home can be put into practice with the products we stock. So why not make use of our free delivery offer and get started right away?
Some of the topics discussed in the book include:
Lighting - our comprehensive range of LED lighting will allow you to upgrade just about every light fitting in your home (or workplace) to LED. As the book outlines, even if you already have 'energy saver' compact fluorescent globes, it's now time to upgrade to LED.
Draught Proofing & Insulation - most downlight fittings are full of holes and create draughts. The author recommends upgrading to fully sealed LED downlight fittings like these. They not only prevent draughts, but they can also be covered with insulation. There is much more to be said on these topics in the book, this is just one small example.
Appliances & Cooking - the book outlines how and why you should switch to induction electric cooking. The good news is that our highly energy efficient Billyboil Thermal Cooker is compatible with all cooktops - including induction.
Heating & Cooling - the book outlines the use of efficient reverse cycle air conditioning systems and how they compare to gas heating. It also suggests localised heating like our foot mat heater and heated throw where practical.
Hot Water - switching from gas to electric is one of the themes of this book (which is still counter to 'conventional wisdom'). They recommend efficient hot water systems, such as our Bosch Heat Pump (coming soon). Efficiency measures are also covered, so don't forget to update your tap aerator inserts.
Energy Monitoring & Control - in case you haven't noticed, we too are big advocates of energy monitoring and control. Check our our plug-in power meters, wireless energy monitors and other gadgets - all of which are mentioned in the book.

Frequently Asked Questions
First published in 2015, is this book still relevant?
It's true that technology is moving ahead rather quickly, but the beauty of this book is that it focuses on key principles. These principles are still absolutely relevant today, and will remain relevant in the future.
Unless you have already zeroed your electricity bills, and eliminated gas & LPG bills altogether, then you probably still have a lot to learn (and apply) from this book.
Is this book also applicable to renters, unit dwellers, or businesses?
Yes - although the case studies included in the book are from free standing dwellings, the principles still apply to all households. Even as a renter you can take direct action on 7 of the 9 "steps" discussed in the book. In the same way, many of the principles can also be applied in business premises.
