Future Wave Typical Savings = $400+ per year

Actual savings will depend on three things:

  1. How long your pool pump is on for each day
  2. Amount of power saved
  3. What you pay for electricity

Example:

A 1.5 horsepower (1,100W) pool pump can easily be pared back to about 400W without drastically affecting circulation rates.

If it is used for 8 hours per day with the Future Wave, the savings will be $613.20 per year (based on $0.30 per kWh).

Simply unplug your pump from the chlorinator or wall socket and plug it into the Future Wave unit as per below. There is no wiring or plumbing required. 

 

How It Works - Variable Frequency Drive

The Future Wave is a type of Variable Frequency Drive or 'VFD' that has been optimised for use with pool pumps.

VFD's essentially take in 'fixed' grid electricity and output 'adjustable' or 'variable frequency' electricity.

What this means in practice is that you can vary the speed of the motor that is plugged into it. Motor speed, in turn, is critically important because power is proportional to the cube of speed. In other words:

Halving the pump speed reduces the power requirement by over 85%

Frequently Asked Questions

Does reduced motor speed lead to increased operating time requirements?

Not necessarily. In our experience, most pool pumps run for much longer than required. As such, reducing motor speed slightly (using the Future Wave) does not mean you will need to increase run-time. In fact, in our home energy audits we often recommend a run-time of 3 to 4 hours per day in summer and even less in winter. See next question for further details.

What if I need to run a pool vacuum or Kreepy Krauly?

The Future Wave controls the speed of the motor. In a pump, pressure is directly proportional to the speed of the motor. Volume is proportional too, but at a different scale from pressure.

At a Future Wave setting of 38.5 Hz:

  • Pressure decreases by 50-60%
  • Volume decreases by 15-20%
  • Power consumption reduces by 50%.

Vacuum water cleaners rely on water volume to operate. In the skimmer box, on the lid where the hose is fitted, there is an adjustable spring valve. If you tighten this valve more water volume is directed to the Kreepy and it will operate satisfactorily (albeit a bit slower) even at a setting of 30 Hz.

Can I connect it to multiple pumps at the same time?

(Eg. Solar heating pump as well as main filtration pump).

No. You can only connect one pump to each Future Wave unit. Generally we do not advise connecting an additional Future Wave unit to your solar heating pump as they tend to only consume around 250 Watts.

How much power is used at different settings?

Power usage can drop to as low as 10% of the pump's rated capacity. Generally, a slightly higher setting such as the pre-tuned 'Optimum Savings' is best. This video shows the relative power used at different flow rates using the 'Flow Adjustment' setting:
