5 Charities That We Have Supported
Last month we said we'd donate $10 to charity for every order over $100 placed on our website between 29 November - 31 December 2017 (link). Thanks to the support of our great customers, we received 522 orders on our website which met this criteria during this period.
As such, we've rounded up and donated a total of $5,250 to the following organisations:
Greenfleet has planted more than 8.7 million native trees across 425 biodiverse forests in Australia and New Zealand to offset carbon emissions. As they grow, these native forests:
- capture carbon pollution from the atmosphere,
- provide vital habitat to native wildlife,
- conserve biodiversity and generate resilience to climate change in the landscape.
Our donation of $1,050 will help offset approximately 70 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. To achieve this offset about 262 native trees will be planted. See our donation receipt and offset certificate.
OzHarvest calls themselves "Australia’s leading food rescue organisation." They collect quality excess food from commercial outlets at the rate of about 100 tonnes per week. This food is then delivered directly to more than 1000 charities supporting people in need across the country. Their approach both reduces food wastage and supports those in need.
According to OzHarvest our donation of $1,050 will help provide approximately 2,000 meals (receipt).
Engineers Without Borders
Engineers Without Borders Australia focuses on major humanitarian challenges including sanitation, housing, clean energy and digital access. Projects are conducted both here in Australia and overseas. They range from introducing school students in remote communities to science & technology subjects, to running university engineering challenges, to deploying solar energy projects.
We donated $1,050 to EWB (receipt).
Pollinate Energy brings life-changing products to people living in poverty in India’s urban slums. They educate customers about products and provide payment plans to make them affordable. They do this through a network of door-to-door local entrepreneurs or 'Pollinators'. Their products include solar lighting systems which are more effective, cheaper to run, and safer than the kerosene lamps they often replace. Their work is currently supported both by donations as well as their direct sales to the public in India.
We have donated to $1,050 to Pollinate Energy (receipt).
Light Up East Timor
It is estimated that at least 20% of homes in East Timor will never be connected to the mains electricity grid due to their remote mountainous locations. Clean solar lighting is a cheap way to improve people's quality of life. Since 2003, the Alternative Technology Association has been working with East Timorese communities to provide clean, renewable lighting and electricity. They have helped install solar lighting and power to more than 1960 homes and 105 community centres, orphanages, schools and hospitals in remote rural villages. Importantly, they have also trained 180 village-based solar technicians.
Our donation of $1,050 is approximately enough to fund two complete solar power systems and train two local technicians (receipt).
